rnrnThis map is a prime exemplar of the Dutch "Golden Age" of cartography, combining the highest standards of art and science. Originally created by Van Den Keere in 1608, this is an updated edition published about 1631 by Jan Jansson. It is geographically advanced, incorporating information from the latest discoveries and utilizing a rectangular grid (Mercator projection) for ease of navigation. Numerous inscriptions refer to the discovery and naming of America, and to early explorations, particularly those in the Arctic and the hypothetical great southern continent "TERRA AUSTRALIS NONDUM COGNITA" (southern land not yet known!). The seas are embellished with ships and sea battles, sea monsters, and a native canoe; there are several examples of elegant swash lettering.
Intricately engraved panels frame the map on all four sides. Across the top, the "SEVEN PLANETS" (actually the five known planets plus the sun and moon) are represented by gods and goddesses from classical mythology. On the right side are allegorical representations of the four seasons, and on the left, personifications of the four classical elements of fire, air, water, and earth. Along the bottom are vignettes of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
