Notes
Survey number HABS CA-1543-CS
Building/structure dates: 1943 initial construction
National Register Number: 96001058
Significance: Building 936, built in 1943, is considered significant for its association with U.S. Naval history and the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINSY), the first naval installation on the west coast. Portions of MINSY comprise a National Historic Landmark. Building 936, however, is outside the landmark and instead part of the Mare Island Historic District. The U.S. Marine Corps Security Detachment Unit assigned to guard the Naval Ammunition Depot initially used this building for heat plant equipment storage from 1943-53. It is a contributing element of the successful base operations at MINSY and is a representative example of support structure design, construction methods and materials used on the island during the WWII era.
