Based on the writings of the 3rd century Roman Caius Julius Solinus, this 1543 atlas is widely reported to contain one of the earliest cartographic account of the American Pacific Northwest. This representation is found on the foldout map labeled Asia Major; the new coast and landmass separated from Asia by a body of water is illustrated by hills and two entwined trees. Other maps accompanying the text describe the history and the geographies of the Roman empire.
